Model B is built for schools, and the students those schools serve are never far from any decision we make about data. This page summarizes our commitments specific to student information — for the full picture, see our Privacy Policy and Security Overview.
The student information Model B processes is limited to what a school enters to operate the platform: name, school-assigned ID, grade level, homeroom or teacher assignment, and dismissal-related information. We do not collect parent or guardian names, contact information, or relationship data. We do not use student data for advertising, and we do not sell it — to anyone, for any reason.
Model B acts as a "school official" under FERPA, performing a service the school would otherwise handle with its own employees, under the school's direct control, and solely for the purpose of providing that service. This means we access student data because a school has authorized it for a legitimate educational purpose — not independently, and not for any purpose the school hasn't directed.
Some features (such as school-recognition and award announcements) may be visible to all authenticated staff at a school rather than restricted to administrators. This content is limited to what schools commonly designate as "directory information" under FERPA — information a school may choose to share without individual consent, subject to its own annual notice and any opt-outs it maintains. That designation belongs to each school, not to us.
Student data access follows a least-privilege model: school staff see what their role requires, district-level roles are scoped to their own district, and substitute teachers receive only a time-limited, narrowly-scoped view of the specific classroom they're covering — with no standing account and no memory of that access once the assignment ends. Every substitute action is individually logged. Model B personnel accessing an account for support purposes see exactly what that account's own users would see, and that access is logged as well. We retain student data only as long as a school's account is active. If a school's relationship with Model B ends, we delete that data from active systems within 60 days, with any remaining backup copies overwritten shortly after. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Several places in Model B allow free-text notes or document uploads. Please don't enter health information, disciplinary records, custody or legal restrictions, or other sensitive personal information into these fields — Model B doesn't review or moderate this content, so responsibility for what's entered rests with school staff.
Many Texas districts require a signed Student Data Privacy Agreement before adopting new software. Model B is prepared to execute the TX-NDPA — the standard agreement maintained by the Texas Student Privacy Alliance, part of the national Student Data Privacy Consortium — rather than a bespoke agreement, so your district can rely on language it likely already recognizes and has reviewed before.
